Prediagnosis alcohol intake and metachronous cancer risk in cancer survivors: A prospective cohort study

Alcohol consumption is a known cause of cancer, but its role in the etiology second primary (metachronous) cancer uncertain. Associations between alcohol intake up until study enrollment (prediagnosis) and risk metachronous were estimated using 9435 participants Melbourne Collaborative Cohort Study who diagnosed with their first invasive after (1990-1994). Follow-up was from date diagnosis death or censor (February 2018), whichever came first. for 10-year periods age 20 decade encompassing baseline recalled beverage-specific frequency quantity used to calculate lifetime intakes, group-based trajectories. We hazard ratios (HRs) 95% confidence intervals (CIs), adjusted potential confounders. After mean follow-up 7 years, 1512 cancers identified. A 10 g/d increment prediagnosis (HR = 1.03, CI 1.00-1.06; Pvalue .02) an ?60 1.32, 1.01-1.73) associated increased risk. observed positive associations (per increment) colorectal 1.07, 1.00-1.14), upper aero-digestive tract (UADT) 1.16, 1.00-1.34) kidney 1.24, 1.10-1.39). Although these findings partly explained by effects smoking, association remained unchanged when current smokers obese individuals excluded. trajectories over life course confirmed Prediagnosis long-term intake, particularly heavy drinking, may increase colorectum, UADT kidney.
